Los Angeles Lakers point guard Russell Westbrook is going to be mentioned in plenty of NBA trade rumors in the coming weeks. Los Angeles is going to do everything it can to hit the reset button on the situation as things didn’t pan out as well as they had hoped it would.
Westbrook was coming to the Lakers as the third star behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis. He had just averaged another triple-double during the 2020-21 season with the Washington Wizards and the organization’s thinking was that he would be able to carry the load whenever James or Davis wasn’t on the court.
The thinking made sense, but the execution was poor. The front office did not do a good job of putting the pieces together, as the roster was ill-fitting. The Lakers were attempting to fit square pieces into circle holes.
It resulted in a disastrous season, as the purple and gold went 33-49. After entering the season as title favorites, the Lakers didn’t even qualify for the NBA Play-In Tournament.
