The San Antonio Spurs have found themselves occupying No Man’s Land over the past three NBA seasons. They’ve missed the NBA playoffs in each, but come close enough to miss out on the lottery.
Arguably, they need to pick a direction and stick to it. They’ve got intriguing young players in Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson. The former took a bonafide star leap in 2021-22, while the latter showed the potential to do the same.
This front office could justify bottoming out to rebuild around those two. On the other hand, it won’t be easy. Murray’s play alone will be an obstacle to losing. The Spurs would have to move supporting pieces like Jakob Poeltl, Devin Vassell, Doug McDermott, and Lonnie Walker IV just to have a chance at securing top 5 lottery odds.
It almost sounds like they’re closer to the playoffs than they are to the lottery.
