Making the Case: Charlotte Hornets
The Charlotte Hornets need improved rim protection and perimeter stoppers if they want to return to the postseason. Ben Simmons could provide both for Charlotte, should they trade for him.
Before his season off, Simmons was a top DPOY candidate for the 76ers. Simmons has the speed and quickness to guard smaller guards, but also the size to bang with bigs. He’s a truly special defender, who brings a level of versatility hardly seen across the NBA.
The addition of Simmons would also pair LaMelo Ball with a true co-star for the first time in his career. Ball has shined in his young career with Charlotte, running the show on offense practically from the start. Adding Simmons, a visionary passer could present Ball with more off-ball opportunities.
Simmons could also be an effective screener, providing devastating finishes and quick-read passing.
LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: 3 Perfect Trade Ideas Involving Hornets’ Gordon Hayward
Losing PJ Washington and Gordon Hayward would be a noticeable blow. Though Hayward didn’t finish the season, he was a versatile player for the Hornets on offense and defense. The hope with this move is that Simmons could fill Hayward’s role, and then some.
PJ Washington is a versatile young center, but Charlotte would be fine without him. Montrezl Harrell, a mid-season addition, can provide an offensive boost in backup center minutes. With Simmons starting at PF, Washington’s role will likely be filled as well.
Simmons hasn’t played in a full season, but his talent is no doubt still there. A move to Charlotte could fully unlock it.
