There has been a lot of attention given to the Los Angeles Lakers and the moves that they could try and make this NBA offseason. But, the moves that they can really make are very limited because of their roster construction.

Los Angeles has only six players on their cap sheet right now; Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Talen Horton-Tucker, Kenrick Nunn, and Austin Reaves. The team desperately needs to add depth one way or another this offseason.

They will attempt to add some by trading Westbrook, but that is easier said than done. Teams aren’t lining up to acquire him unless they are compensated with draft capital. Anthony Davis and LeBron James have been mentioned as potential trade candidates as well, but it is hard to imagine the Lakers giving up on being contenders.

If they want any chance of turning things around and being competitive next season, they need to hold onto James at the very least. What they should be looking to do is bring in more players that fit better around him.

There is a clear-cut formula that has led to plenty of success in building a roster around LeBronJames. Provide him with 3-point shooters and versatile defenders and your team will win. Los Angeles’ front office went away from that last season for whatever reason but needs to get back to that formula this offseason.

One player that could fit the bill and be within the Los Angeles Lakers’ price range is Damion Lee. Lee has spent the last four seasons with the Golden State Warriors after beginning his career with one season playing for the Atlanta Hawks.

He is the exact kind of player that the Lakers need more of on this roster. Lee is a career 35.7 percent 3-point shooter, making 36.6 percent with the Warriors. He is a high-IQ player offensively, finding success as a cutter. If you are open, James will usually find you, it is then up to you to make the basket.

In addition to his fit offensively, Lee is a solid defender. He has the size and length to defend multiple positions and excels as a rebounder. He is in the top quartile of defensive rebounding for his position every season of his career.

That kind of production isn’t easy to come by and there is a chance that the Los Angeles Lakers can acquire him for the bare minimum. If Los Angeles can snag him on a veteran’s minimum, he could provide value similar to Malik Monk this season. Even if the Lakers need to use part of the mid-level exception to bring him in, Damion Lee is a good target for the purple and gold to shore things up on the wing.
