This trade for the New York Knicks would check off a lot of the boxes on the to-do list people believe the team should do this offseason. In this scenario, Mitchell Robinson signs elsewhere via free agency without a sign-and-trade deal so the Knicks have a starting spot to fill.

They fill it with Myles Turner, who provides the team with elite rim protection. He will help modernize the offense as well given his 3-point shooting ability. Turner showed some ability to drive to the basket as well against opponents who close out on 3-pointers too aggressively.

New York also fills their point guard void by acquiring Malcolm Brogdon along with Turner. He is a perfect fit for Tom Thibodeau’s schemes as a bigger guard who can lead the offense in crunch time and provide scoring when necessary. He is also a very good defender, something that Kemba Walker was unable to provide.

There are risks in taking on two injury-prone players, but the Knicks are unloading some long-term money by moving off of Julius Randle in this deal. Randle’s regressed to the mean during the 2021-22 season and looks like he needs a change of scenery.

Nerlens Noel is no longer needed with the emergence of Jericho Sims. Alec Burks is included to help match salary and open minutes on the wing for Cam Reddish.

The Knicks are sending out two first-round picks in the deal, which seems like fair compensation. Indiana was looking for two for Turner ahead of the deadline and Brogdon is probably worth one himself.

Shedding the four-year extension Randle signed would likely require a pick to be attached as well, so New York sends two to Indiana to complete the deal.
