A look over the Memphis Grizzlies’ depth chart does not reveal a clear-cut second offensive option. If they wish to pursue an NBA championship, that’s probably a player they’ll eventually need.
Mitchell, if anything, is overqualified. He’d probably function as something closer to a 1A. The pecking order wouldn’t be important. The number of points these Grizzlies would score on a nightly basis would justify it regardless.
After all, Ja Morant’s relentless drives to the rim would look different with another shot creator alongside him. As it stands, he’s mostly surrounded by floor-spacers who will look to either shoot or pass. Having a stronger threat to attack close-outs, or run his own isolation set, should open up the floor.
Justifying this trade for the Grizzlies is not complicated. They’re assembling, quite possibly, the most talented backcourt in the NBA. Losing Bane particularly stings. We’ll touch on that later.
