Phil Jackson Advising Lakers To Trade LeBron, Keep Westbrook?

Lol Angeles Lakers, NBA Trade Rumors

The Los Angeles Lakers are in for an offseason of some big NBA offseason changes. Depending on who you ask, you will get a different answer on how they should approach things. The one common denominator is that something has to give.

This is a team that had championship aspirations heading into the 2021-22 season but fell woefully short, not even qualifying for the NBA Play-In Tournament. Their Big 3 of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook did not pan out and likely needs to be broken up.

That is the crux of the conversation that many people are having. Which of those three would you move? Many would say that Westbrook needs to go as he is the poorest fit and James and Davis have a championship together under their belt.

There are people who believe Anthony Davis is the one that should be shopped. He would bring back a better trade package than Russell Westbrook, at least giving Los Angeles something to build the roster up around post-James.

While the Lakers wouldn’t get a package near what they sent to the New Orleans Pelicans for him, it is better than the position they are currently in.

Last but not least, there are some that believe the Lakers need to trade James. One of the most prominent people in this camp is reportedly Phil Jackson. Despite the disastrous tenure he had in the front office with the New York Knicks, he is someone that Jeanie Buss still relies on as an advisor.

Phil Jackson’s advice is to trade LeBron James and keep Russell Westbrook. This report was shared by Bill Plaschke during an appearance on The Doug Gottlieb Show.

“I’ve heard that Phil would like LeBron traded. I’ve just heard that. … I do know that Phil would like to keep [Russell] Westbrook and try to make it work with him.”

There is a chance that Jackson is the only person with that stance when it comes to the Lakers. Injuries are seemingly catching up with LeBron James, but when he is on the court, he is still producing at an MVP level.

Trading him would ensure the Lakers aren’t contending for a title next season or any time soon. He is the player that will keep them the most competitive if they can find players that fit around him better than the 2021-22 roster did.

In 2022, it is quite a surprise that someone such as Jackson still carries the weight that he seemingly does in Los Angeles. He hasn’t found success in the NBA in over a decade and showed that he isn’t as savvy in the front office as he is on the sideline.
