Free agency this offseason in the NBA could be unlikely any that we have previously seen. Because there are going to be such a limited number of teams with projected cap space, teams will have to get creative when figuring out ways to upgrade the roster.
Trades will likely be prevalent, as sign-and-trades can be utilized. Teams are also going to be targeting the same players with similar exceptions, so they will have to bring something else to the table to entice these veterans to sign with them.
One of the players that are going to go through that process is Ricky Rubio. Rubio was having an excellent season with the Cleveland Cavaliers and looked like he was going to cash in on a multi-year deal.
Unfortunately for him, he tore his ACL 34 games into the season, which likely ruined his free agency plans.

Rubio averaged 13.1 points to go along with 6.6 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 28.5 minutes per game. He should draw a lot of interest this offseason for teams looking to upgrade their backcourt.
The 11-year NBA veteran would bring a lot of experience to the table, helping mentor younger players. He is an excellent playmaker and solid defender. Had Rubio ever developed a consistent 3-point shot, he would be an elite point guard in this league.

Given the nature of his injury and when he can get back on the court, one-year deals are likely all that he will receive this offseason. However, that could lead to some excellent landing spots on a prove-it deal so that he can cash in again next offseason.
