Houston Rockets Receive: F Davis Bertans, F Josh Green, 2025 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: C Christian Wood

In essence, the Houston Rockets are trading Christian Wood for Josh Green and a pick here. In all likelihood, a straight-up swap of Wood for Green would be sufficient for them if it worked contractually.

It does not. The Rockets take on Bertans’ contract in exchange for some draft capital here. When he signed his $16 million a year pact, he was shooting a cool 42.4% from three-point range. He shot 33.5% in 2021-22. Given his defensive limitations, the deal is a net negative by now.

Wood would be a large upgrade over him for Dallas. He’s a similar floor spacer, but also a much stronger lob threat in pick-and-roll actions. He also has some self-creation chops. The Dallas Mavericks won’t look to routinely lean on them, but they’re valuable in late clock situations.

Meanwhile, Josh Green’s upside is tethered to his jump shot. As it stands, it’s inconsistent. He’s a relentless defender who uses his athleticism and motor to be a constant presence on that end. Still, he needs to be a 3-and-D wing to be a long-term rotation player in this league.

If the Houston Rockets intend to make a deal with the Mavericks, they’ll have to have an interest in Green. He’s about the only intriguing young player on this Dallas roster. There may be a way for them to acquire him without taking on Bertans’ deal.
