The future hasn’t looked this bright for the Indiana Pacers in quite some time. For years, the team was the subject of NBA trade rumors. The fit between Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis, in retrospect, was never viable.

At this year’s trade deadline, the team finally accepted that reality by dealing Sabonis for Tyrese Haliburton.

They won’t need to worry about his fit with anyone. Haliburton is among the most scaleable players in the NBA. He’s an elite floor spacer with a high IQ.

He can run the offense or take a backseat and complement whoever else is doing so. He’s unlikely to be the best player on a contender, but he’s a tailormade second fiddle.

Where this club goes next is anyone’s guess. The Pacers are notoriously allergic to long-term rebuilding projects. If they go about acquiring quality, relatively young players rather than bottoming out for lottery odds, nobody should be surprised.
