Dallas Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson shined in the first round of the postseason. Helping guide the team during Luka Doncic’s injury absence, Brunson has averaged 27.8 points per game in the 2022 NBA playoffs.

Brunson’s performance is notable from an offseason perspective, as the guard will be an unrestricted free agent once the season concludes.

The playoff scoring outburst from Brunson has been timely, as he may be playing his way into a more significant contract. Though his play has helped the Mavericks on the court, they may lose him this offseason. If that is the case, the Mavs would be wise to strike a sign-and-trade deal to receive something in return.

One team mentioned as a sign-and-trade partner is the Sacramento Kings. In a deal that could help the Sacramento Kings move on from Harrison Barnes, the Dallas Mavericks could send Jalen Brunson in exchange for Barnes and some draft capital.

Jalen Brunson makes sense as a fit with the Sacramento Kings. Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox could use another scoring option alongside him in the backcourt. PF/C Domantas Sabonis could also shine as a passer, tossing assists to a slashing Fox or a spotted-up Brunson.

The Kings, despite struggles, seem to be perpetually interested in playoff contention. Taking a swing to add a player who has shown star capabilities in Brunson would not be out of character for the franchise.

Dallas, meanwhile, could add Harrison Barnes in a move to have more size in the line-up around Luka Dončić. Brunson, though talented, is one of the smaller guards in the league, which can cost Dallas defensively at times.

This postseason, Jalen Brunson has proved to be a versatile and efficient scorer and should certainly command an expensive contract. If the Dallas Mavericks don’t commit to the guard long-term, a sign-and-trade could be.
