After a strong start to the 2021-22 NBA season, things quickly unraveled for the Chicago Bulls. Injuries to Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, and Patrick Williams left them depleted.

Along with a gaping hole in their defense. While Chicago still managed to make the postseason as the sixth seed, they were quickly taken care of by the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks.

Following their postseason exit, it’s time for the Bulls to shift their focus to the offseason. Given the success they had early on, it’s likely they attempt to run it back to see how their roster looks when fully healthy. To do so will involve retaining arguably the team’s best player.

This summer, All-Star guard Zach LaVine will enter unrestricted free agency. The 27-year-old is coming off a season where he averaged 24.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. He also shot a solid 38.9% from beyond the arc on seven attempts per game. There is sure to be a market for LaVine, and based on his latest comments, he appears to be keeping his options open.

One team to keep an eye on to acquire LaVine is the San Antonio Spurs. Led by All-Star and Most Improved Player finalist Dejounte Murray, they have a good core of young talent.

All the Spurs need is a high-level talent to be “the guy” for the next phase of the franchise. Free agency isn’t even close to starting, and Murray already has his recruiting hat on.

A move of this sort would be a little ironic. Chicago is fresh off a big sign-and-trade with the Spurs to acquire DeMar DeRozan. Doing so only for LaVine to sign with San Antonio a year later would certainly be an interesting outcome.

If the San Antonio Spurs are looking to make a home-run swing this offseason, signing LaVine is it. He is still in the prime of his career and would be an excellent backcourt partner to Murray. Pairing the two together would give the Spurs one of the league’s best guard pairings.

At this point, it seems doubtful that Zach LaVine will part ways with the Chicago Bulls. That being said, all possible outcomes are worth at least some consideration.
