It’s hard to find a positive word to say about the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2021-22 NBA season.
Russell Westbrook and LeBron James fit like a glove. On a foot. Many observers predicted that they might struggle together. Conventional wisdom has always held that James is maximized when surrounded by floor spacing. Westbrook, for all of his strengths, offers little.
Still, it wasn’t supposed to go this badly. If the Lakers had been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, it would have been greeted with a chorus of “I told you so’s”. However, few pegged them to miss the play-in tournament.
Change should be inevitable, but the Lakers are in a bit of a tough spot. Most of their sizeable contracts border on undesirable. Finding a taker for Russ will be challenging.
