Free agency this year in the NBA is going to be different than in years past. There aren’t many teams flush with cap space to sign players away from teams, so we could see a lot of players re-signing to maximize their earnings.

One of the players that will be looking to cash in this offseason is Robert Covington. Covington is entering free agency after being traded to the LA Clippers from the Portland Trail Blazers ahead of the trade deadline.

Owning his Bird Rights, the Clippers will likely do everything they can to retain Covington in free agency. Steve Ballmer has shown that he isn’t afraid to pay off a big luxury tax bill if it means that the Clippers will be contenders on the court.

Knowing that it is hard to imagine Covington leaving Los Angeles in free agency but you never know what will happen. Until the pen is put to paper and the contract is official, things can change. If Covington were to shake loose, the Dallas Mavericks would make for an excellent landing spot.

Covington was named as the one player that the Mavericks need to chase in free agency this summer over at Bleacher Report and it is hard to disagree with their selection. Dallas is in need of some frontcourt help this offseason and Covington could provide that.

He is one of the best 3-and-D players in the NBA, knocking down more than 100 3-pointers and swiping 100 steals in each of the last two seasons. No other player in the league accomplished that feat. Covington also provides some rim protection, blocking 175 shots the last two seasons combined as well.

That kind of versatility is certainly something Dallas, and really any playoff contender could use more of. Covington would be a perfect fit alongside Luka Doncic as someone that can knock down open jumpers created by Doncic while providing incredible versatility on the defensive end of the court.
