Could Lakers Actually Steal Jason Kidd From Mavericks?

The Los Angeles Lakers wasted no time in beginning their head coaching search. A few hours after their NBA regular-season finale, the search was underway as the team moved on from Frank Vogel.

Vogel’s tenure with the team had the highest of highs and lowest of lows. In his first season, he led the team to a championship in the Orlando Bubble in 2020. This season, they missed the playoffs, going 33-49. Vogel was essentially made the scapegoat for that despite not being the person who constructed the roster and having no control over the injuries that occurred.

Alas, the move was made and now the Los Angeles Lakers are in the market for a new head coach. How things were handled with Vogel, however, could lead to some hesitancy from other candidates. When he was hired, Vogel wasn’t the organization’s first choice, but he was willing to accept the terms that were laid out.

One of those terms was coaching staff members. One of the members who were added to the staff for Vogel was Jason Kidd.

Kidd has since moved on, taking over as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks and putting together an excellent first season at the helm. Is there a chance that the Lakers could convince Kidd to leave Dallas and return to Los Angeles?

Normally this wouldn’t be a topic of discussion for a head coach after one season, especially when it was as successful as the one the Mavericks had. However, Jason Kidd has already done this once in his career.

He left the Brookly Nets after winning 44 regular-season games and a first-round playoff series. The Milwaukee Bucks were his next step, where he spent 3.5 seasons before being fired.

While Kidd hasn’t shown up on any of the potential candidate lists, there are some connections still to the Lakers. LeBron James is a big fan of his and it would make sense to at least check in with Kidd.

However, it is likely to be a fruitless pursuit. Jason Kidd is in a great spot with the Dallas Mavericks, coaching a team with a transcendent star in Luka Doncic. Riding things out in Dallas, where he will have a much longer leash than in Los Angeles, should be the decision that Kidd makes.
