During this final stretch of the NBA regular season, the MVP race has been the biggest discussion among the basketball community. With three players who have a legitimate case to bring home the award, it could go down as one of the closest votes in recent history.

For most people, the MVP debate has been centered around Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. These three are by far in a tier of their own, but there are other players you could build an argument for.

During a recent episode of his podcast, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green chimed in on who he feels should come away with the hardware. His choice was none of the suggested frontrunners. Instead, Green went with Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker.

“For my criteria, Devin Booker is the MVP of the NBA. As consistent as he’s been, he’s faced injuries, he’s come back, hasn’t missed a beat. Their team has continued to win, they’re leading the NBA, in first place by a longshot. Gotta go with Devin Booker as my MVP.”

Devin Booker’s name has been thrown around a lot over the past few weeks as someone who deserves more recognition. Currently, the 25-year-old is averaging 26.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.1 steals.

Most years, winning is a key factor in who ends up winning MVP. Typically, it gets awarded to the best player on the best team. Phoenix has been head and shoulders above the NBA in terms of wins all year, which might be why Green, and others, think Devin Booker should be in the race.

One thing going against Booker’s case is the Phoenix Suns are a team that succeeds as a collective. They operate like a well-oiled machine on both ends, and it’s resulted in them winning 60+ games this season. Because of this, it hurts Booker’s narrative when compare him to the likes of Embiid and Jokic, who have had to lead the charge for their team on a nightly basis.

Devin Booker will certainly get his fair share of votes when the time comes, but it seems unlikely the Phoenix Suns star takes home MVP over one of the three players mentioned above.
