The Phoenix Suns put together an incredible run prior to the NBA All-Star Break. The 48-10 record they have posted is not only the top in the Western Conference, but is the best in the league as a whole. The impact of Chris Paul has been a pivotal element of their success but they will be without it for some time.

Paul suffered a hand injury during the Suns’ 124-121 win over the Houston Rockets right before the NBA All-Star Break when attempting to make a pass. He was diagnosed with a right thumb avulsion fracture and will be re-evaluated in 6-to-8 weeks.

During a media availability, Paul, who has undergone a total of four surgeries on his hands and wrists combined, was seen wearing a cast. He made it clear that “rushing it” is not going to be the course of action they take and that he’ll play the “second” he’s ready.

“I always want to play. When I felt that in my hand, I was mad for all types of reasons,” Paul said. “Obviously we’re not going to rush it. I’m going to try to heal as fast as physically possible. The second I’m able to play, I guarantee you I will be playing.”

In 58 games played this season, Paul is averaging 14.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 10.7 assists, and 1.9 steals. What doesn’t show in the stat sheet is the floor general impact he provides the Suns’ half-court offense along with his general leadership and communication on the court.

Ahead of the NBA trade deadline, the Suns acquired Aaron Holiday to add more depth at the point guard position alongside Cameron Payne and Elfrid Payton. They will need someone among that group to step up while Chris Paul remains sidelined.

Devin Booker surely will be tasked with shouldering a heavier initiation responsibility for the Phoenix Suns. Opposing teams will likely key-in on him more in their game-planning efforts and if that’s the case, he will have a prime opportunity to showcase his value ahead of All-NBA voting.
