The NBA trade deadline is tomorrow and while teams are actively busy engaging with each other on trade talks, there are also discussions forming about which players will wind up being buyout targets over the next few weeks.
Over the last few seasons, the buyout market in the NBA has become a key way for playoff-contending and title-contending teams to add a little bit more talent before the league’s playoff eligibility deadline.
Last season, Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge, Andre Drummond and Jeff Teague headlined a list of players bought out of their contracts. This season, there are several key veterans once again who could have a big impact on the season should they be bought out of their contracts.
Of course it is possible that many of the players being listed as “buyout candidates” could very well be traded over the next 24 hours leading up to the trade deadline, but there is an outside chance that playoff teams will hold out on a trade for them in hopes that they will reach a buyout with their current organization.
