Myles Turner To Be Re-Evaluated In Two Weeks; Impact On Trades

Myles Turner, Indiana Pacers, NBA Trade Rumors

The Indiana Pacers sound like they will be open for business ahead of the 2022 NBA trade deadline. However, given recent developments, their plans may have to be altered a little bit.

When it was originally reported that the Pacers were open to rebuilding, three names were mentioned as possible trade targets; Domantas Sabonis, Myles Turner and Caris LeVert. All three would have brought a solid return package back to Indiana.

Sabonis is a two-time All-Star and likely would command the biggest return package. Turner’s skill set as an elite rim protector and capable floor spacer probably make him the player with the most suitors. LeVert’s injury history is a real red flag, but he has played at an All-Star level in the past.

Trading any of them will bring back some good assets to the Pacers. Alas, an injury to Turner will likely cause them to change course. Turner was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left foot, which will sideline him for at least two weeks. At that point, he will be re-evaluated.

With the NBA trade deadline set for February 10th, Turner’s timetable to return could push him right up against that date. As a result, his value on the trade market has plummeted.

On a recent episode of Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective, Turner’s trade value, following news of his injury, was discussed. If you are the Indiana Pacers or a fan of the team, you aren’t very thrilled right now.

“We’ll see what happens with [Myles Turner’s] foot. And if there’s anything lingering…I’m not at least offering anything of true value.”

Windhorst is right. No team is going to trade valuable assets for a player coming off an injury, let alone a big man with foot problems. Turner can be a legitimate difference-maker for a team that acquires him, but there sounds like there is some risk to doing so now.

Is there a possibility that the injury becomes worse, transitioning from a stress reaction to a stress fracture, sidelining Turner for an even longer period of time? These are all things teams will have to prepare for and their trade offers will reflect that.

This could also complicate Domantas Sabonis’ trade market. It seemed unlikely that they would deal both of their starting big men, but with Myles Turner on the shelf, Indiana might be more inclined to hold onto Sabonis now to keep their faint playoff hopes alive.
