Would this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
For the San Antonio Spurs, this trade is a massive win. Sure, they’re losing a couple of quality veterans and two young players, but they’re getting a potential All-Star who they can pair alongside another potential All-Star in Dejounte Murray.
The duo of Murray and John Collins would be a very intriguing pair, as both are still fairly young. Murray is far and away the best player on the Spurs, so putting a lob threat and floor-spacer like Collins next to him would only help him improve.
San Antonio’s starting lineup after this deal could look something like this – Murray, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Collins, and Jakob Poeltl. That starting five is extremely young, full of potential, and might just have enough talent to compete for the play-in (especially with Gregg Popovich running the show).
Taking on Danilo Gallinari’s contract would be super doable for the Spurs, too, as they aren’t really trying to compete right now. Plus, while trading Lonnie Walker IV may not be ideal, this makes it so they don’t have to worry about extending him.

Overall, this trade would be great for the Spurs. They would be capitalizing on the unhappiness of Collins and buying low on him while the Hawks are (probably) desperate to make a change right now. San Antonio may not be the flashiest organization, but why not shock the world with this deal?
