The Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks came together for the first size-able move ahead of the NBA trade deadline. The deal sent Cam Reddish to a new landing spot ahead of being eligible for a contract extension in the offseason.

The final trade between the Hawks and Knicks included Kevin Knox II and a 2022 first-round draft pick via the Charlotte Hornets being sent to the Hawks in exchange for Reddish, Solomon Hill and a 2025 second-round pick (via Brooklyn).

According to Fred Katz and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, before the New York Knicks acquired Cam Reddish, the Atlanta Hawks held trade discussions with the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Detroit Pistons over the ‘past several months.’ The desire to land a first-round pick impacted those talks.

Atlanta was looking for something closer to the slot where it drafted him, No. 10 overall, but nothing materialized. The front office had conversations with the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons over the past several months, sources say, but the Hawks were always waiting for that first-round pick for Reddish.

The Knicks became a natural trade partner for the Hawks when considering a variety of different circumstances. Between the CAA connection of Reddish’s representation and Knicks president of basketball operations Leon Rose, reuniting with former Duke teammate RJ Barrett, and New York having multiple 2022 first-round picks, there was a lot going their way for Reddish.

The Lakers’ pursuit was a rather weak one. Los Angeles had offered two second-round picks given the depleted nature of their available assets, that could show a limited nature for their pursuit of other trade targets.

Recently, The Athletic learned that the Lakers had offered two second-rounders for Reddish. Still, the Hawks believed a team would eventually offer the first-round pick they sought. They asked for Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes, the No. 25 selection during this past summer’s draft, during negotiations, but the Knicks turned them down, sources said.

Each of the teams who pursued Cam Reddish clearly will need to set their sights elsewhere as the NBA trade deadline continues to approach. Meanwhile, Reddish remains focused on recovering from an ankle injury before he can make his New York Knicks debut.
