Would this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?
The Boston Celtics would be (in theory) getting their point guard of the future in Jalen Brunson. The 25-year-old has shown flashes of being that all-around great point guard that most teams would love to get their hands on. If they feel like Marcus Smart has run his course in Boston, this would be a decent deal.
Brunson would be able to grow alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. He’s already averaging a similar number of assists as Smart, so presumably, Brunson would still be able to grow as a playmaker. He’d also be able to have the ball in his hands a lot more since Luka Doncic (obviously) handles the ball the most in Dallas.
Dorian Finney-Smith and Maxi Kleber would be quality pieces in Boston’s frontcourt rotation, too. Both of them are solid defenders and can also space the floor. The Celtics need to prioritize adding as much shooting as possible at the deadline.
The one downside to this trade is the fact that the C’s would have to re-sign both Brunson and Finney-Smith at the end of the year. That’d be a huge risk for them to take, so they would have to weigh it against the obvious pros of the deal.

From a purely fit and basketball perspective, this trade would probably be a win for the Celtics. Losing Smart would anger some Celtics fans, but the three players they’d get in return fit a bit better. Again, though, they would have to consider the fact that they’d have to re-sign Brunson and Finney-Smith.
