Does this trade make sense for the Chicago Bulls?
There is really no risk for the Chicago Bulls by trading for Robert Covington and he is exactly the kind of complementary role player they could utilize at many different positions. Patrick Williams’ return is still up-in-the-air at this point and Chicago cannot bank on the fact that he will be their defensive-stopper come playoff time.
Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso are two great defenders in their own rights, but they have no chance at guarding guys like Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo and other high-level All-Stars in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Maybe Robert Covington does not stand much of a chance either, but he has the length and stature to be an impact defender that can take on the challenge of guarding these guys in the playoffs.
Surrendering Coby White would result in the Bulls’ bench unit taking a slight hit in terms of offensive production, but rookie Ayo Dosunmu has played really well this season and when Alex Caruso returns, White’s minutes will drop anyways.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Coby White “is available for the right upgrade”, so the Bulls could already be making and fielding calls to try and trade Coby White ahead of the trade deadline.
Adding Robert Covington to this Chicago Bulls team gives them another defensive player to lean on primarily on the wing and in their frontcourt, as well as another role player that they can look to for production outside of their three All-Stars.
