The New York Knicks know firsthand how much a trade can help a team turn things around. Their season took a turn for the better when they acquired point guard Derrick Rose from the Detroit Pistons last NBA season in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr. and a second-round pick.

Leon Rose, Scott Perry and William Wesley will assuredly be looking to make the same kind of impact acquisition this season. They have an identical 20-21 record this season as they did through 41 games last season, but things feel different with this team.

Last season’s team you knew what you were going to get every night. They had a defensive identity that helped keep them in any game. No matter the deficit they may have faced, you knew that the Knicks would get enough stops to get themselves back into the game. The same cannot be said about this team.

The front office opted to go after more offensive-minded players in Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier in free agency. They replaced Elfrid Payton and Reggie Bullock, both of whom were defensive-minded players. The results have not been as positive as the team had hoped.

As a result, the Knicks are looking to shake things up. Bringing in a player that can provide the defensive impact that Bullock did would make a lot of sense. One player that could fit that mold is Cam Reddish of the Atlanta Hawks.

All indications being given are that the Hawks have, or eventually will make Reddish available for trade. The Knicks are reportedly one of the teams that will have an interest in trading for him, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv.

The Knicks are also among the teams who have had a degree of interest in Cam Reddish, per sources familiar with the Reddish dynamic in Atlanta.

Reddish would be a perfect fit for what the Knicks are looking for. He has prototypical two-way size, standing 6’8” with a 7’1” wingspan. New York is lacking defensive stoppers on the wing and Reddish has the size and athleticism to provide that consistently.

This season, Reddish has also taken a step forward with his shooting. He is knocking down 37.9 percent of his 3-point attempts, something the New York Knicks could certainly use more of as well.

The reported asking price for Cam Reddish in the past was a first-round pick. In addition to all of their picks, New York has one from the Charlotte Hornets that could convey in this year’s draft and a second one from the Dallas Mavericks in 2023 that they could build a package around.
