CJ McCollum has not played since December 4 due to a collapsed lung, Damian Lillard is dealing with an ongoing abdominal issue that will keep him out through at least January 23 and the Portland Trail Blazers are currently 15-24 this NBA season.

Guys like Anfernee Simons, Larry Nance Jr. and Norman Powell have all stepped up to keep this team in the playoff hunt, as they are tied record-wise with the San Antonio Spurs for the 10-seed in the Western Conference right now, but things are not looking good from a big picture standpoint for the Trail Blazers.

Lillard is having arguably his worst season since entering the league despite averaging 24.0 points per game and the Blazers just do not have the high-level talent required to be a top team in the Western Conference.

Sooner or later, the Portland Trail Blazers are going to be making some moves on the trade market and they could very well look to rebuild. While they have been to the playoffs each of the last eight seasons, Portland has not gone anywhere as a franchise in a while and are beginning to be surpassed by other teams in the league.

Some kind of change needs to happen for this franchise soon, which is why they are expected to be one of the busiest teams at the trade deadline this season. Keeping Damian Lillard long-term is the only goal of this front-office right now, which is why guys like Jusuf Nurkic, Robert Covington and even Norman Powell are being talked about in possible trade scenarios.

After receiving a five-year, $90M deal this past offseason, it is hard to imagine that Norman Powell will be on the move, but both Nurkic and Covington could easily be moved since they are in the final year of their respective contracts.

Robert Covington is not a high-level scoring talent in this league and never has been, but he has made a name for himself as being a really strong defender. Standing about 6’7” with a 7’2” wingspan, Covington can guard numerous different positions and has even played quite a few different positions himself through the years.

For his career, Covington has shot 35.8% from three-point range, making him a key “3-and-D” like player on the wing or in a team’s frontcourt. Only making $12.9M in the final year of his contract, the veteran forward is expected to draw quite a bit of interest from playoff teams across the NBA, one of which could be the New York Knicks.

After being the 4-seed a season ago, the Knicks have struggled to find their identity this season, as they are just 19-21 on the season. Finding ways to get back to who they were defensively a season ago could be key for this franchise, hence their potential interest in someone like Robert Covington.

So could the New York Knicks look to get a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers for the veteran forward? Let’s take a look at a trade proposal put together by Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale that sends Covington to New York City.
