Hawks GM Travis Schlenk Sounds Motivated For Roster Changes

One of the more disappointing teams in the NBA thus far this season has been the Atlanta Hawks. After making a surprise run to the Eastern Conference Finals in last season’s playoffs, many expected them to be a fixture in the postseason for years to go. Could 2021 have been a fluke?

The Hawks are currently on the outside looking in on the playoff picture. They are in 12th place with a record of 16-20, 1.5 games behind the 10th place Boston Celtics. Some of the same issues that plagued them at times last season have crept up once again this season.

Atlanta is an elite offensive team, ranking second in offensive rating. However, they are once again abysmal defensively, ranking 27th in defensive rating. Their poor performance on defense is canceling out all of the great work they do offensively.

Where the Hawks are struggling is in transition defense. They are dead last in points allowed per possession off of a steal. Atlanta doesn’t even turn the ball over often, but when they do, it is extremely detrimental.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Trae Young Doing Best To Carry Hawks, But Changes Needed

Live ball turnovers are almost automatic buckets against the Atlanta Hawks as they struggle to sometimes even get back on defense after a made basket. Some of this can be attributed to their scheme as they are sometimes left unbalanced on the court with multiple players too close to the basket to rotate back on defense.

Missing players such as De’Andre Hunter to injury will also harm the defense. Players being in and out of the lineup won’t help, but that is something every team has dealt with this season.

It seems pretty clear that the Hawks could use some changes on the roster. Some people thought they were a prime candidate to make a move in the offseason to consolidate some of the players on the roster.

While that didn’t happen, it sounds as if general manager Travis Schlenk is ready to make a move. As shared by Hawks Fan TV, Schlenk had some strong comments, saying it may not have been the best idea to bring everyone back and that there are two chances to make moves; the trade deadline and draft.

Atlanta was involved in some rumors throughout the offseason and thus far in the regular season, but there haven’t been any changes made. Expect that to change in the coming weeks leading up to the NBA trade deadline, as Schlenk sounds ready to make a deal.
