The tenure of Julius Randle with the New York Knicks has had some severe peaks and valleys. In his first season with the team, he admitted that he was trying to do too much and live up to the contract as the No. 1 option. He struggled and fans were ready to trade him for a bag of balls.

In Year 2, he made the leap. He bought in and the team found a ton of success as he ascended to All-Star and All-NBA level. Fans loved him and he signed an extension that helped give the Knicks flexibility in the future. That was the high point, as we are now in another valley.

Randle has struggled this season to replicate the success he had last season. Without him playing at a high level, the rest of the team sometimes lags as well. It is highly unlikely he is traded, but if the Knicks did entertain the idea, they need to aim big.

Building a package around him for Anthony Davis would be aiming big. The Los Angeles Lakers have their own long-term issues to consider, but as long as LeBron James is there they are in win-now mode.

Looking to hedge their bets a bit, could they trade Davis for a package that includes Randle, veterans with salary to help match, some combination of the young Knicks of RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin, Quentin Grimes, Miles McBride and Kevin Knox and draft picks?

Extremely unlikely, but a fan can dream, right? Davis would bring the star power that the organization was hoping Randle would continue ascending to. His presence defensively would be welcomed with open arms, as Randle has left a lot to be desired on that end of the court.

If New York is looking for a bit of a reset in the frontcourt and has buyer’s remorse on Randle’s deal, Davis makes for a logical target.
