Does this trade make sense for the Portland Trail Blazers?
If the Portland Trail Blazers make Robert Covington available in trade talks leading up to the trade deadline, he will definitely be a player that playoff teams consider adding. His versatility in the frontcourt and ability to guard guys bigger than him is something you do not find often and there are some teams with large enough trade exceptions to absorb Covington’s contract.
The Boston Celtics are one of a handful of teams that could explore adding Robert Covington with their $17M TPE, but this trade with the Phoenix Suns is definitely an interesting scenario for Portland.
Right now, they would probably decline this offer should it come their way, but closer to the deadline, this is a deal that could make some sense for the Blazers if they are still losing and just looking to get value for a guy in the final year of his contract.
Dario Saric is not a terrible player, but he is by no means someone that could change the Trail Blazers’ misfortune. Coming off a torn ACL as well, there could be limitations to the big man’s game.

However, Saric could provide immediate frontcourt depth when he returns from injury and the Blazers would add two future second-round picks. Having very limited draft capital through the years and looking to add some more talent to their roster in the future, maybe these two picks could be intriguing to Portland in the sense that they could move them again in future trades.
In terms of adding value, this trade does not really do too much to help the Portland Trail Blazers right now, but it does give them some options moving forward, more than they currently have with Robert Covington in the final year of his contract.
