Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Giving up Dennis Schroder means that the Boston Celtics would be giving up one of their more reliable scorers and offensive players this season, so why would Boston want to make this move? Well, they obviously would be looking to add more talent to their roster in place of Schroder, but there is a lot to like about what the Celtics get from Dallas in this deal.

Josh Green is only 21-years-old and while he definitely still has a lot of growing to do, the Celtics can afford to give him time to develop in their system over the next year or so. They have an immediate need for bench talent, giving Green some minutes off the bench right away, but they also have one of the better developmental programs in the league.

Pairing Josh Green with other young talents like Aaron Nesmith, Payton Pritchard, and others gives the Celtics a really strong foundation for future success around their two All-Stars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

In addition to adding Green, the Celtics would also be adding two second-round picks in 2022 and 2024 via Dallas. Again, there is not much value presented here, but this gives Boston eight total draft picks through 2024.

Whether they use said picks to add more prospects to their young core or look to leverage them in other trades for immediate talent, the Celtics would be left with options on how to build their team moving forward.

The Celtics are still a few pieces away from being real threats in the Eastern Conference and quite honestly, Dennis Schroder does not make too much of a difference in their chances for success in the postseason.

Jayson Tatum is going to do his thing and when Jaylen Brown is healthy, he will continue to be a high-level scorer and defender for this team as well. Finding key secondary scorers to add around them is key for the Celtics at the trade deadline this season, but they also need to have a plan in place for what the future holds.

Adding Schroder was never a long-term move for this franchise and while the assets they get from Dallas may ultimately prove to be nothing, at least they present potential for this franchise moving forward.

They could definitely wait and try to get a better deal for Dennis Schroder, but Boston needs to be interested in moving him ahead of the trade deadline this season.
