What Will Collin Sexton’s Market Be After Injury?

Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Collin Sexton went down with a knee injury only 11 games into the season. The meniscus injury that he suffered will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season, which clouds his NBA future.

Throughout the offseason leading into the 2021-22 campaign, there were a lot of rumors swirling that the Cavaliers could look to move on from the No. 8 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The sides were far apart on extension negotiations, as Sexton’s representation was looking for money similar to what Jamal Murray and De’Aaron Fox signed for with the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.

Both Murray and Fox signed max contracts, but that wasn’t something comfortable the Cavaliers were giving to Sexton. As a result, he could be a restricted free agent next offseason if Cleveland extends him a qualifying offer.

At this point in time, it is anyone’s guess as to what Sexton will be offered or where he will even land. He scored a career-high 24.3 points per game last season and is a bonafide scorer, but there are some flaws to his game

Coming into this season, he proved that he can score from every level of the offense, but he left a lot to be desired as a lead guard. His playmaking has been improving, but there are still some areas of weakness. While you will never question his motor or level of effort, Sexton is limited defensively because of his size, or lack thereof.

But, it would not shock anyone if Sexton improves on those flawed areas once he returns to the court from rehabbing this meniscus injury. While making an appearance on The HoopsHype Podcast, Cleveland Cavaliers beat writer Chris Fedor shared an update on Sexton’s rehab and that he is attacking his rehab as he would anything else basketball-related; at full throttle.

“I’ve talked to a couple of people close to Collin, and they say the same thing they always say. When it comes to Collin, he doesn’t do anything half a**. He attacks it full throttle, and he’s attacked his rehab in the same kind of way. The belief is because Collin is such a worker, he’s going to come back better, and he’s going to come back stronger. That’s his goal.”

It is always a relief getting positive updates from a player that is rehabbing. It is a difficult process to go through, but it sounds as if Collin Sexton is going to come out of it on the positive side of things.

Turning 23 in January, there are likely plenty of teams that would take a chance on him if the Cleveland Cavaliers do not see him as a long-term fit. His free agency is one that plenty of people will have their eyes on once the offseason rolls around.
