There are two teams that have been far better than others in the NBA this season — the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors. Both teams have combined to go 49-11 this season. The question remains, who is the best team in the league?

Well, let’s check out the head-to-head matchups. Phoenix got the better of the Warriors in their first meeting of the season. In their second matchup, the Warriors dominated the Suns 118-96 without Devin Booker on the floor. The margin of victory was convincing and let’s remember, Klay Thompson has not played yet.

When looking at the best team in the Western Conference, and the league overall, there are many factors.

The Suns and Warriors are scheduled to meet on Christmas Day in Phoenix, which is just great scheduling by the league. Both sides expect to be healthy with the exception of Thompson, who is expected to return sometime in early January. With Thompson on the floor, Golden State should take another step.

Golden State did not need to make a splash in the offseason. Steph Curry led the league in scoring last season and is playing at an MVP level once again.

Thompson has been out for over two years now with different injuries. Getting him back on the floor is almost like landing a big free agent. Even without the other splash brother on the floor, the Golden State Warriors are 25-6 this season and back to looking like a championship contender.

Phoenix brought Chris Paul back after he opted out of the final year of his contract. Paul signed a new four-year deal that will keep him in Phoenix until he is 40 years old.

Mikal Bridges also inked a lucrative deal and the core remains intact for the Suns. This does not include Deandre Ayton, who was unable to get a deal done. The plan for the big man is currently pending. With that being said, the Suns remain 24-5 on the season and look like they will contend for a second consecutive appearance in the NBA Finals.

When looking at both teams, it all depends on which style you prefer.

The Warriors are continuing to win games the way they always have. Curry is going nuts offensively and the team can dominate from the perimeter. Draymond Green adds a defensive prowess and even Andrew Wiggins is improving from three-point range. Down low, the Warriors leave much to be desired and this is where they have been linked to trades for Myles Turner.

Phoenix has great depth at every position. Paul is a future Hall-of-Famer who knows how to run an offense. He has helped Ayton take the next step and look like a promising talent and future star. Booker continues to be one of the best scorers in the league and will look to remain on the floor for the remainder of the season.

Paul has played many big games in his career and finally took the next step towards a championship last year. The Phoenix Suns fell short but have a chance to return. The Warriors are used to winning and seem to be back to where they want to be. Thompson will have all of the difference here.

When looking at the success of both teams, it is hard to ignore that one is doing it without one of its most important players. Thompson is set to return in January, which means he will have plenty of time to get back to 100% before the postseason. The Golden State Warriors have a chance to return to being that powerhouse that they have been for years.

Injuries might have hurt the Warriors in recent years but they are finally healthy and it is showing. So who will win in a best-of-seven series? That is what NBA fans are hoping to see in the Western Conference Finals this season. At this point, it is hard to argue against a proven team that has been there in Golden State, especially with Thompson returning.

The beauty of the NBA is that we will see some more matchups between these two sides. Up next, it will be Christmas Day.
