This Mavs-Rockets Trade Lands Eric Gordon In Dallas

Now in his 14th season in the NBA, Eric Gordon has consistently been a very reliable scorer on the wing and has been a part of numerous title contending teams with the Houston Rockets over the years. While they never won a title, Gordon was a big part of their success and still has a little bit left in the tank to continue helping playoff contending teams.

However, this is not going to be the case in Houston, as the Rockets are currently 10-20 and the only thing they are contending for is the top pick in the 2022 NBA Draft! Soon to be 33-years-old, Eric Gordon is on the back-half of his career and wants to be on a team that has a shot to win now instead of rebuilding like the Rockets.

Back in September, Kelly Iko of The Athletic reported that Eric Gordon is open to moving on from Houston, but that both he and the Rockets have not talked about his future.

“Sources with knowledge of Gordon’s thinking say while Gordon hasn’t approached management to ask for a trade, he’s open to moving to a more favorable situation. In meetings between his representation and Houston this offseason, the Rockets communicated they would love to have Gordon stay.”

Houston would be very smart to move on from Gordon since his contract is not favorable to their rebuild and given his contributions to them over the years, it would be a nice gesture for them to send him to a team where he has a chance to compete in the playoffs.

From a pure talent standpoint, many teams around the league are definitely interested in adding Eric Gordon as a secondary scoring talent on the wing, but being owed $58.7M over the next three seasons has lowered his trade interest dramatically. Still though, one team who could be interested in taking on this contract and Gordon is the Dallas Mavericks.

Led by Luka Doncic, the Mavericks definitely look like a playoff team this season, but they have been very inconsistent all year long. Doncic seems to be their only reliable talent and while both Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. have played well, this team is just lacking overall talent.

Dallas ranks just 21st in the league in offensive rating and 20th in the league in defensive rating, making them a very mediocre team overall.

Given their cap situation and not having much room to take on big contracts, bringing in Eric Gordon may not be the best move the Mavericks can make this season, but Dallas is going to have to make some kind of a move at the NBA trade deadline.

Getting a veteran on the wing who can shoot and create for others is definitely advantageous to a team like the Mavericks, especially since they really do need to add another wing scorer. Could we see the Houston Rockets and Mavericks, two enemies of the past, find common ground on an Eric Gordon oriented trade?

Let’s take a look at a trade proposal put together by Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale that would send Gordon and another role player to the Dallas Mavericks for some key talents in return.
