The New Orleans Pelicans have had a tough start to the 2021-22 season. They have had one of the toughest schedules in the league, which is hard enough to navigate. When you are going it without your best player, the results are as poor as you would imagine they could be.

New Orleans currently has a record of 9-21, 3.5 games behind the 10th place Sacramento Kings for the last spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament in the Western Conference. There is certainly enough time in the season to make up that ground, but they will have to do it without Zion Williamson for the foreseeable future.

Williamson had been recently ramping up workouts, getting closer to a return to the court. In late November he went to the doctor for scans on his foot and everything was progressing well. But, he recently hit a snag in his rehab.

Williamson began experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired foot. As a result, the Pelicans scaled back the work that he was doing. He did some low-impact work after progressing to four-on-four work.

That low-impact work will be all that Williamson will be doing for the next 4-to-6 weeks as the team announced that he received an injection in his foot. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype provided the most recent update on the former Duke product.

This is a brutal blow for the Pelicans who have gotten way too used to playing without Williamson. After being picked No. 1 overall in 2019, Williamson missed the first 13 weeks of the season because of a knee injury. He will likely surpass that mark this season, as we are closing in on the season being 10 weeks old.

There is no denying the talent that Zion Williamson has, but these injuries are a real concern. He has already dealt with numerous lower-body injuries and is only 21-year old. The team’s success this season hinged on him being in the lineup, but he will miss more than half of the games in a season for the second time in his three-year career.

Brandon Ingram will be counted on to continue carrying a big load for the New Orleans Pelicans along with Jonas Valanciunas and Devonte’ Graham.
