The San Antonio Spurs enter the 2021-22 NBA season rebuilding and looking to continue developing their young talents further, but they also enter the season with ambitions of trading Thaddeus Young. They acquired Young in the sign-and-trade deal that sent DeMar DeRozan to the Bulls this offseason, but the veteran forward is not a player the Spurs will be keeping long-term.

Being in the final year of his contract and owed $14.1M this season, Young is definitely a key talent that several teams around the league could be interested in targeting. Last season with the Bulls, the 33-year-old big man averaged 12.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.1 steals and shot 55.9% from the floor.

He is not the type of player that is going to make a huge difference in a team being a championship-level threat, but Thaddeus Young is the definition of a consistent player in the frontcourt in today’s NBA.

Young can do a little bit of everything to help his team win games and now with Jakob Poeltl in the league’s health and safety protocols, the Spurs could look to utilize the veteran more than they have already.

Now expected to get playing time and still on the trade block, Thaddeus Young has a chance to improve his trade value heading into the middle months of the 2021-22 NBA season.

San Antonio is wanting first-round value for Young, so if he plays well, they may be able to get this in a trade for him, but as of right now, they are going to have to lower their expectations.

No matter who trades for him, Thaddeus Young will be a “one-year rental” type of player and it would make sense for a team with a rather large trade exception to pursue him in a trade. One of these teams could very well end up being the Boston Celtics.

Starting off the new year rather slow and not living up to expectations, Boston could be in a position where they need to make a move to upgrade their roster rather quickly and they could definitely utilize another big man in their rotations.

Thad Young’s fit with the Celtics next to another veteran in Al Horford definitely makes sense, but what would the Celtics be willing to trade for him?
