Portland Trail Blazers Receive: F Jerami Grant

To start things off, the Detroit Pistons do not want to and probably will not trade Jerami Grant ahead of this season’s trade deadline. However, his value is at an all-time high right now and they could very well wind up getting a ton of future assets by trading him

Now in his 8th NBA season, Jerami Grant has turned himself into a borderline All-Star in Detroit and while he is currently out with a thumb injury, this is not expected to limit his trade value whatsoever. If they are to trade Grant, the Pistons are going to get a lot in return and they do in this trade with Portland.

Anfernee Simons and Nassir Little are both young, dynamic players that Detroit should be thrilled to get and while Robert Covington is a veteran, he is in the final year of his contract and is not a financial liability.

In fact, Covington could not only fit in with this frontcourt with Kelly Olynyk being out indefinitely due to a knee injury, but the Pistons could look to get another team involved in order to get a draft pick for Robert Covington.

The draft picks situation is where things can get confusing though for Portland. Prior to this season, the Blazers traded for Larry Nance Jr. in a three-team deal with the Bulls and Cavaliers.

As part of this trade, Portland traded the rights to their 2022 first-round pick, but this pick is protected Top-14 through 2028, meaning that Portland’s draft capital is currently tied down barring the effects of this trade.

Seeing as the Portland Trail Blazers are outside of the playoff picture right now, they would retain their pick this season, meaning that the Bulls would have the rights to their 2023 first-round pick with Top-14 protections on it and so on and so on every year until the pick goes to Chicago.

This means that Portland is unable to trade any of their first-round picks until two years after this “2022 first-round pick” goes to Chicago and who knows when that will be! Assuming that they trade for Jerami Grant and make the playoffs this season, the Blazers would be able to trade their 2024 first-round pick unprotected, but there are no guarantees that this will happen.

There is some liability tied to these draft picks going to Detroit, which could just force the Pistons to decline this offer.
