Kelly Oubre Jr. Has Been Thriving With Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte Hornets, Kelly Oubre Jr., NBA Trade Rumors

The Charlotte Hornets have had to play without several players recently because they all landed in the NBA’s health and safety protocols. Many of those players that are sidelined are rotation players, so others have had to step up in their place. One of the players who has helped pick up that slack is Kelly Oubre Jr.

Oubre has had a nice bounceback season with the Hornets, rediscovering his shooting stroke that abandoned him last season with the Golden State Warriors. He is averaging 16.5 points per game, making 46.6 percent of his shots and 39.4 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Both percentages represent what would be career-high marks. Oubre is struggling at the foul line, connecting on only 64.2 percent of his attempts, but his effective field goal percentage of 57.7 is by far a career-high as well.

In his last seven games, Oubre has found his groove. Over that span, he is averaging an impressive 25.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. He is shooting an impressive 52.8 percent from the field overall and a scorching 44.3 percent from the 3-point line, connecting on 4.4 per game.

This is one of the best stretches of Oubre’s career and it could not have come at a better time. He is playing major minutes with how many players are out of the lineup and he is responding with some big performances. Charlotte is going to need it to continue if they are going to stay afloat until they can get their rotation back in order.

The Oubre that the Hornets are getting more closely resembles the one that the Phoenix Suns had during the 2019-20 campaign, which was the best season of his career to date. He never quite fit in with the Warriors, but that 2020-21 season is looking more like a blip on the radar than a sign of things to come.

Kelly Oubre Jr. and the Charlotte Hornets agreed to a two-year, $24.6 million deal in free agency. It was a lot lower number than many anticipated Oubre to sign for and the deal has proven to be quite a steal for Charlotte as Oubre has outperformed his salary by a long shot.
