This Hornets-Mavericks Trade Involves Gordon Hayward To Dallas

Currently 11-11 in the Western Conference, the Dallas Mavericks will probably find their way into the postseason for the third consecutive season, but they really are one of the most mediocre teams in the entire NBA.

Ranking just 21st in offensive rating and 18th in defensive rating, there is not one thing that you can pinpoint and say that the Mavericks are good at this season and the only plate that really stands out for them is Luka Doncic.

The 2x All-Star will be making his third straight All-Star appearance this season, but he alone cannot carry this team to postseason glory. Kristaps Porzingis has been better than expected so far this year, but injuries still remain a concern with him and Tim Hardaway Jr. is not much other than a catch-and-shoot threat on offense.

Their bench ranks 14th in the league in scoring, but with no real reliable scorers other than Doncic, this team is destined to once again lose in the first-round of the playoffs.

Dallas has not made it out of the first-round of the playoffs since they won their only championship in 2011 and if they are to have a shot at being one of the final four teams standing in the Western Conference this season, they are going to have to take a risk and make a big move.

They tried doing so a few years back with Harrison Barnes, which did not work out, but adding an experienced, All-Star-caliber wing like Gordon Hayward would go a long way to this time finally reaching their full potential.

The Mavs do not have much cap space over the next few years to add a lot of talent and with Doncic’s contract set to increase, the only way they can better themselves is via trade.

The Hornets are currently one of the best scoring teams in the NBA right now and they seem like they are in a great position to contend for a playoff spot, so trading Hayward is not something they are probably interested in, but the idea of doing so definitely has to cross the minds of this Charlotte front-office.

Gordon Hayward is 31-years-old and is set to make $91.5M through the 2023-24 season. The Hornets have been really good this season, but they are young and still a long ways away from being a true threat against the likes of the Nets, Bucks and Heat in the Eastern Conference.

Freeing up some much needed cap space now by trading Hayward may not be the worst thing this organization can do, especially since they have forwards like Miles Bridges, P.J. Washington and Jalen McDaniels who have all played well and can fill the minutes left behind by Gordon Hayward.

Can Dallas pull off a big trade to land Hayward from Charlotte this season? Let’s take a look at a trade proposal put together by Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes that would send Gordon Hayward to the Mavericks.
