3 Trade Targets For Brooklyn Nets — Pass Or Pursue?

Brooklyn Nets

Kyrie Irving’s situation has seemed to cast a shadow over the Brooklyn Nets this NBA season, yet this team has still found ways to be successful without one of the best guards in the entire NBA. Obviously having two former league MVPs in Kevin Durant and James Harden has helped them continue being one the best teams in the league, but the Nets’ supporting cast is beginning to play well.

Both Patty Mills and LaMarcus Aldridge are two veterans that have stepped up in a huge way for this team early on in the season and secondary talents like Bruce Brown, James Johnson and even DeAndre’ Bembry are beginning to play well given the opportunities they are seeing.

Brooklyn has been dealing with a bunch of injuries this season, causing the Nets to go deeper into their rotations than they would have liked to this point.

Joe Harris is battling an ankle injury that he recently had a scoping done on, most likely causing him to be out until early 2022 and big man Nicolas Claxton has left this frontcourt short-handed due to being sidelined with an undisclosed illness.

Losing Joe Harris for a vast amount of time is definitely going to have a big impact on this team, especially since he is one of the best three-point shooters in the league and since he has been one of this team’s best scoring weapons over the years.

Kevin Durant and James Harden can only do so much for the Nets chances of winning a title this season, which is why their depth is going to have to shine. Patty Mills, LaMarcus Aldridge, Bruce Brown, Paul Millsap and others are going to have to play big roles moving forward, but the Nets could also look to add more talent to their roster ahead of the trade deadline.

Being close to $60M over the salary cap and about $35M over the tax line for this season, Brooklyn is very limited in terms of moves they can make, but it is worth noting that this team has an $11.4M TPE that was created when they executed a sign-and-trade with Spencer Dinwiddie, sending him to the Wizards this past offseason.

While they are already paying a lot in luxury taxes, the Brooklyn Nets could hypothetically use this trade exception to bring in another high-impact player, one that could tighten things up rotation-wise given that Kyrie Irving is most likely out for the year and since Joe Harris could miss the next 6-8 weeks.

Do the Nets have the ability to make some big trades ahead of this season’s trade deadline? Let’s take a look at three players Brooklyn could target, as proposed by Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, and evaluate whether or not the Nets should “pass or pursue” said trade targets.
