Would this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
If the best part of a return in an NBA trade scenario is Jalen Smith, who is entirely unproven in the NBA, it’s probably not the best option out there for a given trade piece.
The San Antonio Spurs would also be taking on the contract of Dario Saric, who is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a torn Achilles. He is set to earn $9 million through 2022-23 — making it a requirement for any team that lands him to get compensated for taking on his deal.
The Spurs would not receive enough value in return for parting with Thaddeus Young in this trade alone. Factor in how Saric would be involved and the deal is all the less appealing.
There is some intriguing when it comes to Jalen Smith’s abilities as a player. However, he just hasn’t shown really anything because he hasn’t earned his way onto the floor with the Phoenix Suns.

The Spurs would be better suited looking elsewhere in order to get a deal done in exchange for Young. This one just doesn’t do much beyond further solidify a tanking effort.
