Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Boston traded for Juancho Hernangomez in the offseason, but the 26-year-old forward has only played in 9 games as an end-of-the-bench guy that only sees time when a game is basically over. Hernangomez holds no value to the Celtics right now, which is why they would be thrilled to trade him and a second-round pick for JaMychal Green.

While Green has not been spectacular this year, he is an experienced big man in this league that can fill many different roles for a team like the Celtics. Averaging 5.9 rebounds per game for his career, JaMychal Green could be another impactful frontcourt player defensively for Boston, as well as be a stretch big man in pick-and-roll situations since he has shot 37.4% from deep over the course of his career.

As mentioned earlier, the Boston Celtics also has a handful of trade exceptions to use, which is how they could absorb Green’s salary with no financial hardships coming their way. Whether he plays or not, JaMychal Green provides stability and depth for a Celtics’ frontcourt that does not really have much talent right now.

Al Horford and Robert Williams III seem to be the only big men that can contribute meaningful minutes for the Celtics this season, which is why it is not a bad idea to add Green as “insurance” in their frontcourt. Williams and Horford have been susceptible to getting injured and if they are to miss a long period of time, Boston would have to play with some small rotations.

Having Green gives the Celtics another reliable and experienced forward that can play a few different positions and also be a threat to score on the perimeter. At the cost of Hernangomez and a second-round pick, Boston would be getting a key veteran to help them in their playoff push.
