Hawks’ Trae Young Getting Hot After Rough Start To Season

The Atlanta Hawks have been a streaky team thus far in the 2021-22 NBA season. After starting the season off with a record of 4-3, they lost six consecutive games. They have since won four straight games, as they are climbing their way back to the .500 mark.

Part of the reason for the team getting things going again is the play of point guard, Trae Young. The Hawks go as Young goes, and at the beginning of the season, there were some up and down performances that the team was unable to overcome.

In the first nine games of the season, Young shot an abysmal 25.5 percent on 3-point attempts. Not consistently beating opponents from the perimeter led to some underwhelming offensive performances by the Atlanta Hawks, who do not have the defense to overcome off shooting nights.

The six-game stretch that he had after that was quite impressive. While the team only went 2-4, Young did everything he could to get them a victory. He made 50.9 percent of his 3-point attempts, scoring at least 23 points in all six games. Young poured in a season-high 42 against the Milwaukee Bucks to snap the losing streak and start up this winning streak.

In the last two games, Young has once again struggled with his jump shot, making 2-of-13 from beyond the arc. But, the team won both games and Young has been able to overcome the lack of success from the 3-point line with his efficiency at the foul line.

In the last two games against the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Hornets, Trae Young has gone a perfect 17-for-17 from the charity stripe. Even when his jumper isn’t falling, Young is nearly automatic from the foul line, making 90.6 percent of his free throws this season.

His frequency of getting to the foul line is down, as he was one of the players who were most impacted by the NBA’s rule change and emphasis on not rewarding what they deem non-basketball plays. It is something that he had to adjust to and it looks like he has begun doing that more recently.
