Could Pacers’ Myles Turner Land With Timberwolves?

NBA trade rumors are nothing new for Indiana Pacers center, Myles Turner. He has heard his name mentioned in hypothetical trades for a while now, as the team has reportedly been considering a move involving him for two years.

The thought process behind a move involving Turner is to break up their jumbo frontcourt. The pairing of Turner and Domantas Sabonis seems to have run its course. Both players are better suited to be playing the center position, as the team is better with either one of them on the court compared to both of them sharing the frontcourt.

If Indiana really wants to blow things up and bring in a stronger package, they could shop Sabonis. The two-time All-Star would likely draw a lot of interest on the trade block. But, Turner has garnered plenty in his own right.

Last year, the Boston Celtics offered Gordon Hayward and a first-round pick for Turner, but the Indiana Pacers turned the deal down. He is in the midst of a career season, so the Pacers would do well cashing in when his value is at its highest.

There are plenty of teams that should have an interest in Turner. He is a perfect fit for the modern NBA as an elite rim protector defensively that can space the floor offensively. Playing alongside a power forward that doesn’t have as much of the offense run through them as Sabonis does could also help him expand on his offensive repertoire.

One team to keep an eye on in regard to Turner is the Minnesota Timberwolves. On an episode of The Scoop With Doogie, Darren Wolfson mentioned Minnesota as a possible landing spot for Turner.

“Darren Wolfson: “I still wonder about Myles Turner. I can tell you there are Myles Turner fans here in the Wolves front office but much like Ben Simmons… Is there a logical match?”

The logical match is in reference to the trade package to land Turner, as it is difficult to build a package that makes sense for Simmons as well. But lineup-wise, it also isn’t a logical match.

Pairing Turner with Karl-Anthony Towns in the frontcourt would lead to some awkwardness. Yes, the Timberwolves could certainly use the rim protection and defensive presence Turner brings, but is there any hope for a Turner/Towns pairing actually working out?

With the current NBA landscape of teams going small and spreading the court, would the Minnesota Timberwolves be able to find success with a jumbo frontcourt pairing? It is hard to envision that being something that helps the Timberwolves win many more games.
