The Charlotte Hornets began the new NBA season 3-0, their best start in franchise history, but they have struggled as of late, losing five of their last eight games. While they have won three straight games over quality opponents in the Grizzlies, Knicks, and Warriors, Charlotte still has a lot of work to do if they are to be real playoff contenders in the Eastern Conference.

LaMelo Ball has made some big strides from his rookie season and looks like a potential All-Star point guard this year, but the Hornets’ biggest surprise has been the production of Miles Bridges.

To this point in the year, Bridges is averaging 21.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and is shooting 44.8% from the floor, making a very strong case for Most Improved Player this season.

With other key talents in Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier, the Hornets definitely have one of the more exciting young teams in the league, but their frontcourt is where all their problems lie. Charlotte ranks 25th in the league in defensive rating and this is because they have no stability in their frontcourt with P.J. Washington out.

On November 3 against the Warriors, Washington suffered a hyperextended left elbow and has not played since. He has since started to practice with the team and while this injury is not too serious, it has definitely told the Hornets where they need to get better.

Mason Plumlee was a key offseason addition at the center position for this team, but they really do need more production from their guys if they are to make the playoffs.

Going out ahead of the trade deadline and adding another young, versatile big man could be something the Hornets look into, which is why Marvin Bagley III could be on their radar.
