Beginning the new NBA season 6-7 is not how the Boston Celtics imagined things going entering the year, but with a new head coach and Jaylen Brown out due to a hamstring injury, this team was bound to face some “bumps in the road”.

Jayson Tatum has been playing like an All-Star once again and the team has received some big-time performances from Dennis Schroder lately, but the Celtics still seem to be missing something in regards to being real threats in the Eastern Conference.

At full-strength, there is no doubt that this team is a playoff team, but whether or not they can make it out of the first-round remains a big question mark right now. Tatum and Brown are great, but can this supporting cast really step up when they are needed most against some of the best teams in the conference like the Heat, Nets and Bulls?

Dennis Schroder, Josh Richardson, Al Horford, Robert Williams III, and Marcus Smart are the other key offensive threats next to the Celtics’ two All-Stars, but each of these guys have their inconsistencies. Schroder, Richardson, and Smart have all been known to disappear at times in big games and as for Horford and Williams, neither one is really a dominant frontcourt talent.

All of these guys are really talented players, do not get me wrong, but they do not appear to make up what can be a championship-contending core. Boston is definitely close to reaching this threshold, but they may have to be willing to go out and not only spend money ahead of the trade deadline but go after a young, highly-talented guard in this league.

The Boston Celtics could really use a floor general and facilitator at the point guard position and given his excellent two-way play, this young guard could fit right in with their system. Dejounte Murray is now in his 6th season with the San Antonio Spurs and is looking really strong to begin the 2021-22 season.

Through 13 games, Murray is averaging 18.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.0 assists, 2.1 steals and is shooting 44.9% from the floor, 32.7% from three-point range. He is not much of a perimeter shooting threat, but at 25-years-old and being as athletic as he is, Dejounte Murray is the key to Boston possibly making it back to the Eastern Conference Finals.

However, the Spurs have shown no signs of giving him up and he is currently one of the faces of their rebuild. San Antonio has missed the playoffs for back-to-back seasons for the first time in their franchise’s history and they are currently trying to create a path for future success.

Murray has been a big part of their rebuild to this point and he currently leads the team in scoring, assists, steals and ranks second in rebounding. Do the Celtics really have the ability to pry away the young guard from San Antonio?

Let’s take a look at what the Boston Celtics would have to give up to have a shot at acquiring Dejounte Murray from the San Antonio Spurs and if this deal is worthwhile for both sides.
