This Trade Sends Rockets’ Eric Gordon To Kings

Trading away James Harden last season ushered in a new era for the Houston Rockets, one that will be built through the draft and their young talents. The Rockets are currently 1-10 this NBA season and rebuilding with youthful, athletic players, which is why they will begin phasing out some veterans like Eric Gordon.

Now in his 14th year in the NBA, Eric Gordon has always been a consistent player on the Rockets’ roster, but he does not really fit their long-term plans anymore. The soon-to-be- 33-year-old shooting guard has served his purpose as a role player on their championship-contending teams through the years and does seem to be frustrated with how things have been going this season in Houston.

“It is the same old thing over and over,” Gordon told the media after the Rockets’ recent 112-104 loss to the Detroit Pistons, another young, rebuilding team in the NBA. “We just had too many droughts where we dug ourselves in a hole and we compound mistakes throughout the game. We just have to find ways to find consistency offensively and defensively and it seems like every team is getting going on us at sometime.”

Being one of the oldest guys in the locker room definitely has to be a tough feeling for Gordon right now, especially since he was on a team in the Western Conference Finals not too long ago just games away from reaching the NBA Finals!

Finding a way to move Eric Gordon is going to be something Houston looks into this season, but they will definitely face some challenges trying to do so because the veteran is owed $58.7M over the course of the next three seasons.

Not many teams in the league will be willing to take on this kind of contract, but the Sacramento Kings could be a team interested in what Gordon brings to the table.

Sacramento has been rebuilding for years and while they are still searching for ways to better themselves moving forward, they are looking to end a 15-season playoff drought. Currently 5-7, they are the 9-seed in the Western Conference early on in the year and may have a shot to earn a playoff spot this year via the play-in tournament.

Going out and adding an experienced playoff-ready guy like Eric Gordon could benefit the Kings greatly and while they are tight on cap space, they do have a way to bring the veteran to Sacramento. Not only could they look to leverage a young talent that does not want to be there anymore, but the Kings could look to move a veteran of their own as a “salary dump” move with a third team.
