Why New Orleans Pelicans Do This Trade

The New Orleans Pelicans came into the offseason with some very clear-cut needs for the roster. With rumors swirling that Zion Williamson already has been in his corner that wants him out of New Orleans, David Griffin has to get a roster together that will start winning some games.

New Orleans cut down a lot of salary this offseason but needed to improve their 3-point shooting and defense. This deal would certainly improve the perimeter shooting on the team.

Hield is one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in the NBA. He is a career 40.6 percent shooter from 3-point land and does it on volume. He averages 3.0 makes per game on 7.4 attempts, which would give New Orleans the floor spacing they crave.

Combined with Devonte’ Graham, whom the Pelicans acquired this offseason to help replace Lonzo Ball, New Orleans would have one of the deadliest shooting backcourts outside the Golden State Warriors Splash Brothers of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Williamson and Brandon Ingram will have plenty of room to operate with those two pulling defenders away from the basket. Hield has some defensive chops, but he does not represent an upgrade compared to what is traded away in this deal.

That would be something the Pelicans would still have to address, but their 3-point shooting woes would be a thing of the past. How do the Kings feel about this deal? Let’s take a look.
