There are different groups of teams in the NBA and one group consists of franchises used to winning that is going through a bit of a transition. That is what is happening to both teams in this deal. Both the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs missed the postseason last year and looking to make the appropriate moves to return.
For Toronto, they are just two years removed from their first championship in franchise history. Kawhi Leonard is not coming through the door which means the Raptors will have to rely on other pieces. They decided that Fred VanVleet was going to be their franchise player when they signed him to an extension last season.
This does not mean that the front office is going to sit on their hands and watch as the team continues to struggle. Masai Ujiri always has his eye open for the next big trade and this could be one of them.
The Spurs are a similar team when looking at their recent success. They have been the league’s best franchise for the better part of two decades but that has begun to change.
