Does this trade make sense for the Toronto Raptors?

With the Toronto Raptors heading towards a small rebuilding process, it definitely makes sense for them to leverage Goran Dragic as soon as possible. Now 35-years-old, Dragic is in the final year of his contract and quite honestly, one of the final years of his career.

He has had a terrific career with multiple teams in this league, but Dragic does not really do anything to help this Raptors team long-term. This year, there was thought he could continue being a solid secondary guard next to VanVleet and others, but he is just eating $19M of salary cost and not making a difference in this team winning games. However, if he’s getting DNP-CDs at this point, is that going to actually happen?

Toronto could possibly make it back to the postseason this year, but they can do so without Goran Dragic on their roster, which is why they should move him. Just letting his contract expire at the end of the season does nothing for the Raptors and they could potentially salvage some extra value from losing Kyle Lowry to Miami by trading Dragic to Dallas.

Trey Burke would be a nice short-term addition in this backcourt due to his three-point shooting abilities and Josh Green definitely has the potential to be a young wing in this system for many years to come. He has the length to be a factor defensively and in Nick Nurse’s system, one that gives wing defenders a lot of value, Green could wind up being a core piece of the Raptors for a long-time to come.

Of course, the most valuable part of this trade though is the immediate first-round pick from Dallas that would almost definitely convey over.

This pick would give Toronto two first-round picks in the 2022 NBA Draft, not only giving them the ability to add two more high-level, young talents to their roster as they look to rebuild into a championship contender but having two first-round picks gives them the ability to maybe add another All-Star to their roster in the near future.

The Raptors have shown interest in Ben Simmons throughout the offseason, so they are definitely interested in adding another key talent to pair with guys like Siakam, VanVleet, and Anunoby for the future success of this organization.

Moving Dragic to Dallas gives them the pieces they would need to pull off another big-time trade in efforts to contend for another championship in the future, hence why this trade makes sense for Toronto.
