Losing DeMar DeRozan in NBA free agency seemed like something that was unavoidable for the San Antonio Spurs and they did in fact lose him to the Chicago Bulls, but the Spurs were able to make this a sign-and-trade deal.
Not only did the Spurs come away with some draft compensation, but they also received Al-Farouq Aminu (who was waived) and veteran forward Thaddeus Young.
Now in his 15th season in the NBA, Young is coming off a really solid year with the Bulls in which he averaged 12.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and shot 55.9% from the floor, but the Spurs do not seem to want to utilize the big man on their roster this season.
Ever since he arrived in San Antonio, there has been a lot of talk about the Spurs trading away Thaddeus Young, but they were unable to strike a deal before the season began with another team. In their season-opener versus the Orlando Magic, Young did not step foot into the game once and he was a healthy scratch.

Seeing as they are rebuilding and want to get their young talents as much playing time together as possible, it makes sense for the Spurs to look at trading Young right now while he still holds some value on the trade market, but who could they possibly get for him?
San Antonio definitely knows they are not going to get a huge return for the veteran forward, but getting a young talent or two, as well as some draft compensation could be all they are looking for.
With this in mind, let’s take a look at a three-team deal that would involve not just the San Antonio Spurs with Thaddeus Young, but the Indiana Pacers and Dallas Mavericks as well.
