Does this trade make sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves?
Trading Karl-Anthony Towns is not something that you immediately look at and think the Minnesota Timberwolves would benefit from, but at the same time, they would be getting everything they need right now from this trade.
Ayton is two years younger than Towns, giving the Timberwolves another young center to build with, and both Jae Crowder and Dario Saric are two veteran players they can utilize for more depth.
Minnesota needs to make some kind of a big move to improve moving forward and by making this trade, they would be going all-in on the fact that Anthony Edwards can be their No. 1, All-Star-level player. They would have a core of Edwards, Russell, Beasley, McDaniels, Ayton, Crowder, Beverley, Prince and some other contributing players, making this Timberwolves team a legit threat to make the playoffs.
Does trading Towns make the Minnesota Timberwolves a better overall team though? In the short-term, the answer has to be yes because of the talent they get back in this trade, but long-term, the Timberwolves should want to do everything they can to keep their All-Star center.

Afterall, Karl-Anthony Towns is only 25-years-old and has now been in the league for six years. He has averaged over 24 points per game in four of the last five seasons and when healthy, Towns is a Top-5 center in the NBA.
All this organization needs to do is find more talent to add around Towns and they will be back in the playoffs, but if they trade him, they would most likely be taking a step backwards in their rebuilding process.
Plus, their current core of Towns, Russell, Edwards, Beasley and McDaniels could wind up being just fine this year, allowing this organization to be “buyers” instead of “sellers” for once at the trade deadline.
